An excerpt from The Scoop on Poop

On a sunny Saturday, it's not unusual to see 25 dogs per hour on the first mile of Leif Erikson. That's 300 per day, 600 per weekend. If we figure there are half as many on the weekdays,, that's 1350 dog visits dog visits per week. Now the data takes a graphic turn. Say each dog produces 3/4 pound of waste per visit. That’s 1012 pounds per week. Half a ton of dog poop.
Even if this estimate is high, the impact on the environment is obviously significant. And half a ton of poop is going to fill up that trash can in a hurry. Then what happens? It gets trucked out to Arlington and dumped into a landfill.
So what's a responsible dog owner to do?   Remember to pack at least one extra plastic bag, carry it home, and toss it into your garbage can. Alternatively, say thanks to Parks & Rec for footing the bill to empty that garbage can on Leif Erikson, and leave your bag there.  Whatever you do, please don't forget, or ignore, your clean-up duties.  And for goodness sake don't leave piles − in plastic or not − for others to find along the trail.
