Website Standards

Please consider the following standards when populating content on your site:

Image Standards: Images should be less than 50kb in file size to account for dial-up speed. 150x113 pixels is a good size for an average image.

  • Photoshop is the tool we will use to prepare images for the web.
  • You can use any image tool you wish. If you do not have any commerical software, we recommend downloading XNview.

Assorted Document Types: When placing .pdf .doc or .ppt files for download on your site, put the size of the file and type of file in parenthesis or brakets next to your link. Example: The U.S. Constitution (225kb Word) or (1.3Mb PDF)

Link Standards: Create your links on specific actions on word in context. Bad Example: To take action click here.  Better example: Take action to save the lynx!

Style Guidelines

  • Use headings to break content into sections. Typically, you'll use the subheading to accomplish this.
  • Use italics to emphasize something, or as a note to the user.
  • Use bold for emphasis as well, but also to highlight important words and as a subtle way to improve readability. Most internet user scan pages quickly, so bold will draw the eye down the page and to the most important words or phrases.
  • If you need a new heading, font, or other text style - Please ask ONE/NW. Do not use HTML to change the size and color of your text.

Review your work in IE
Be sure to always view your site in Internet Explorer. Firefox, Safari and Netscape are all great browsers, but the majority of the general public will be using IE. Pages will appear differently in IE than they do is these other browsers.
