The following trails and firelanes are open to equestrians:

Leif Erikson Road, Saltzman Road, Springville Road, BPA Road, Newton Street, Firelanes 1,7,10,12 & 15. Please consult a map of Forest Park for more detail. Free maps are available for pickup at the Friends of Forest Park office at 2366 NW Thurman.

NOTE: The following information is based on information provided by Beth Webber of Oregon Equestrian Trails (OET). The information is anecdotal, and we are not able to guarantee current conditions at any of these trailheads. Please use your best judgment and scout each trailhead before driving in with your trailer.

Springville Rd is possible for a smaller 2 horse trailer to go to the parking lot but the turn is too much for anything big. The other option is to pull just past the power station (I'm thinking that is what it is) at the top of the road, then back in and come out facing Skyline. Parking along that edge. This also opens up Firelane 7 as an option.

Saltzman Rd has no space for anything but a car to turn around, nor parking options on nearby side roads.

Leif Erickson at Germantown Rd used to be great until the washout many years ago. Now, it is a case of "hope not too many cars" are there ahead of you. Even a small rig won't be able to find any room there in the middle of the day. I haven't been there since the parking has been restricted since, if one cannot pull in, it is a long haul down to Highway 30 to turn around. This also effectively limits access to Firelane 10.

I haven't been down Newton Rd for a long time. I had a frightening time once trying to get out after it was graveled. Ever try to back a horse trailer down rolling gravel around a corner downhill? I finally got out of there with the horses out of the trailer. After that, I started parking at the top of the road in a wide spot - taking care to keep the road and nearby driveway clear but now that has been signed. The turn around at the bottom was also made smaller last time I looked. This is still a possibility if a person has a smaller rig and has checked it out first before going with horse to be sure their rig could do it.

BPA Road I'm thinking that is the one near Old Skyline Rd and part of that road is signed for no parking - but part is not, and the folks living on the road were OK with us parking there any size rig would likely be fine. The downside is the need to walk the horses along the side of Skyline with little edge around a blind corner to get to the trailhead.

Firelane 12 & 15 can be done by driving west past it and backing into a neighborhood to the north, then turning back to the east. Very close to there on the south side of the road is a wide gravel spot. It can take most any rig.
